The U.S. Army screens soldiers' body composition with a tape measure instead of a lab: height, neck and waist for men, plus hips for women. Its logarithmic formula is the official method behind Army fitness standards.

This calculator runs the exact Army equations from AR 600-9. Measure in inches, keep the tape level and snug, and take each measurement three times and average them, the way the regulation asks.

How to use this calculator

Choose your gender, enter height, neck and waist in inches (plus hips for women), and the tool estimates body fat with the Army method.

  1. Select your Gender from the dropdown.
  2. Enter your Height, Neck and Waist measurements in inches.
  3. Women also enter the Hips measurement.
  4. Read the body fat percentage and compare it with the Army max standard.

Frequently asked questions

What formula does this use?

The official U.S. Army equations from AR 600-9. For men it is 86.010 times log10 of waist minus neck, minus 70.041 times log10 of height, plus 36.76. For women it is 163.205 times log10 of waist plus hips minus neck, minus 97.684 times log10 of height, minus 78.387.

Can you show a worked example?

A man 70 inches tall with a 15 inch neck and 34 inch waist scores about 17.5 percent. A woman 64 inches tall with a 12 inch neck, 28 inch waist and 38 inch hips scores about 27.9 percent.

What are the Army limits?

The common ceiling shown is 20 percent for men and 30 percent for women, but the real standards slide with age brackets. This calculator shows the headline figure; the regulation tables give the exact limit for each age group.

How should I take the measurements?

Use inches, keep the tape level and snug without pinching, and measure the waist at the navel. Take each measurement three times and use the average, exactly as the Army procedure requires.
