🐱 Cat Age Calculator
Cats age much faster than humans in their first two years: a one-year-old cat is roughly equivalent to a 15-year-old human, and by age two the cat is about 24 in human terms. After that, each cat year adds roughly four human years.
This calculator converts your cat's real age into human-equivalent years and shows which life stage your cat is in, so you can adjust food, vet visits and playtime accordingly.
How to use this calculator
Enter your cat's age in years (fractions like 0.5 work for kittens) and read off the human-equivalent age plus the life-stage label.
- Type your cat's age in the years field.
- Read the human-equivalent age headline.
- Check the life stage — kitten, prime adult, senior and more.
How Old Is My Cat in Human Years?
The old rule of multiplying by 7 is wrong for cats. Veterinary science uses a front-loaded scale: the first year of a cat's life equals about 15 human years because kittens mature so quickly, the second year adds about 9, and every year after that adds roughly 4. So a 5-year-old cat is about 36 in human years, and a 12-year-old cat is around 64 — firmly a senior who benefits from twice-yearly vet checkups.
Frequently asked questions
How old is a 3 year old cat in human years?
About 28 human years. The first year counts as 15, the second as 9, and the third adds 4 more, giving 15 + 9 + 4 = 28.
Is the 7-year rule accurate for cats?
No — multiplying by 7 underestimates young cats and overestimates old ones. The veterinary formula (15 + 9 + 4 per year) matches real feline development far better.
When is a cat considered a senior?
Around 11 years old, which is roughly 60 in human years. Senior cats should see the vet twice a year and may need joint-friendly food and easier litter-box access.
How long do indoor cats usually live?
Indoor cats commonly live 13 to 17 years, and many reach 20. Indoor life avoids traffic, predators and most infectious disease, which is why indoor cats outlive outdoor cats by years.
Do different cat breeds age differently?
Slightly. Larger breeds like Maine Coons mature a touch slower but the human-age formula works well for all domestic cats. Very small or very large individuals may shift by a year either way.
