Value-added tax is quoted both ways: shops show the gross price with VAT inside, while business invoices often start from the net price. Converting between the two by hand is a classic source of small errors.

Enter the amount and the VAT rate, then choose whether to add VAT on top or pull it back out. The calculator shows the VAT amount, the net value and the gross value together.

How to use this calculator

Enter an amount and a VAT rate, then choose to add VAT on top of a net price or strip it out of a gross price.

  1. Type the Amount in your local currency.
  2. Enter the VAT rate as a percentage.
  3. Choose Add VAT to a net amount or Remove VAT from a gross amount.
  4. Press Calculate to see the VAT amount, net value and gross value.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the two modes?

Add VAT multiplies a net price by one plus the rate to get the gross price. Remove VAT divides a gross price by one plus the rate to recover the net price and the VAT inside it.

Can you show both with numbers?

At 20% on $1,000: adding gives $200 VAT and a $1,200 gross; removing gives a net of about $833.33 with $166.67 of VAT inside the $1,000.

Why is the VAT different in each direction?

Because 20% of the smaller net number is less than 20% of the larger gross number. Removing VAT takes a smaller slice out of the gross price.

Which countries use VAT?

Most of the world outside the US uses VAT or a similar goods and services tax, with rates commonly between 15% and 25%.
