How are tons calculated?
Cubic yards equal length times width times depth in feet, divided by 27. Tons equal cubic yards times 1.4, the standard conversion for crushed stone and gravel.
Can you give a worked example?
A 20 by 10 foot area at 3 inches deep is 1.85 cubic yards, which converts to 2.59 tons of gravel.
Does the 1.4 tons per cubic yard figure vary?
Slightly, by stone type and moisture: dense crushed granite can reach 1.5 tons per yard while lighter decorative rock is nearer 1.2. The tool uses the widely quoted 1.4 figure for general estimates.
